A debris field has been identified as the remains of an F-35 fighter jet that went missing Sunday north of Charleston

In a statement say the debris field was discovered nearly two hours northeast of the base.

This incident is currently under investigation and officials say they are unable to provide any extra details

The missing fighter jet came from a squadron whose mission is to train the pilots and support crews on the F-35

The air base had said it was working with Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort to "locate an F-35 that was involved in a mishap"

The pilot was prepare to eject safely and was taken to a medical center
